Girl, 16, and father-of-two cop, 36, die after she was slipped under ice in frozen Ohio lake and he suffered heart attack while trying to save her

An Ohio police officer died of an apparent heart attack on Tuesday night as he took part in a rescue mission to pull a 16-year-old girl from a frozen lake.

The teen also died by drowning after becoming trapped under the ice near a private dock at Rocky Fork State Park for four and a half hours before she could be rescued.

According to WCPO, she had plunged into the water to save her 13-year-old brother, who later managed to escape and raised the alarm.

Jason Lagore, 36, an officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, was among the first responders who rushed to the scene at around 6.30pm on Tuesday when a construction worker called 911 on finding the panicked 13-year-old.

The department said in a statement that the father-of-two suffered medical emergency shortly after the rescue attempt began and also fell into the water.

First responders tried to save him, and he was taken to Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro, but medical staff were unable to resuscitate him.

The Highland County Coroner said preliminary results indicate Lagore had a heart attack, WLWT reports.

The teens who fell into the water have not been identified.

According to Lt. Branden Jackman of the Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District, the 13-year-old was freezing and screaming for help when he was found by the construction worker.
