Hate cough syrup? Try this natural remedy of banana and honey to ease your cough
With the smell of smoke all over the place, air pollution or just a matter of aging, we can’t help to catch on cold sometimes, the one that is accompanied by endless cough and sneezing.
Cough is a body’s natural response that clears your throat from mucus or foreign irritants, and it might be caused when some food blocks your airways. Cough can be acute or chronic. Acute cough lasts for less than three weeks, and chronic cough lasts over eight weeks.
Acute coughs may be caused by colds, flu, irritants and pneumonia while the chronic coughs are usually caused by allergies, asthma, bronchitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease or postnasal drip.

Foreign media reported that natural drink made of banana and honey actually has the same effect as cold syrup and can effectively relieve cough.
- 2 ripe bananas
- 2 tablespoon of raw honey
- 400ml of water
Note: It’s better to use organic bananas and raw organic honey when making the syrup, but normal ones will do just fine too.
- Pour the water in a pot and bring to a boil. Remove from the stove.
- Take 2 bananas, peel them and blend in a blender or mash with a fork.
- Once they’re ready, add them to the water and stir until homogeneous.
- Leave it as is until the mixture cools.
- Add 2 tbsp honey and stir again.
This 3-ingredient mixture helps treat coughs; take 1 tbsp of it 2-3 times a day before meals.
If you’re allergic to honey, don’t use it.
According to nutritionists, banana is an excellent sleep remedy as it helps to elevate serotonin level—helping you get better sleep at night. However, keep in mind that this only applies to fully ripe bananas.
Eating bananas when you are suffering from cough, cold and other problems like nausea or vomiting helps in getting rid of the diseases easier. Banana is a part of BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce and Toast), a diet-type recommended for people suffering from cough, cold and stomach ailments. Bananas are rich in nutrients and fast-acting carbs with soluble fibre content.
Avoid unripe bananas and use those with brown spots on its skin.
Raw honey is versatile in its healing properties, particularly in respiratory complaints. It possesses antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce the intensity and duration of a cough. For better results, make a tea with two tablespoons of honey and two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with adequate water. Lemon will act as an antioxidant and help to boost your energy. Always use raw and unpasteurized honey, avoid the one that contains added sugar.
