A Brazilian woman has an incurable skin condition and has lived most of her life in the shadows, away from people who might laugh at her appearance, but she would unexpectedly find someone who loved her for what she is – and even married her in spite of her appearance!
Karine de Souza, from Fortaleza in Brazil, was diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum when she was three-years-old. This rare skin condition forces her to smother herself in SPF100 sunscreen every two hours, even while inside her home with the curtains closed.
Every time Karine’s skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays she is at risk of skin cancer because she is deficient in the DNA system that repairs damage.
Karine has had 130 surgical procedures to remove lesions caused by the sun, including the removal of her lower lip and part of her nose.
Three years ago she met a man named Edmilson through social media. Edmilson says he ‘fell in love with her story’ and her ‘strength’.
Soon after the couple started dating, they posted photos of them together online, which led to comments questioning the legitimacy of their relationship. Edmilson Alcântara and Karine’ prenup photos made waves online after Daniel Panisson Fotografias shared their photos online.

While many people might take one look at Karine and then run away, Edmilson loved her for her appearance. She already looked like this when they met, but that did not stop him from falling in love. A lot of people wondered why a healthy, handsome young man would choose a girl like her. However, for Edmilson, his love for Karine is beyond her physical appearance! He loved Karine because she was a wonderful woman, despite the scary appearance she might have.
