For many women, donning a set of eyelash extensions is simply an easy way to add a little more ooomph to your eyes. It’s harmless, right? Nothing bad can come of it, right?

Wrong. At least in certain cases. According to reports, optometrists have now issued a warning relating to an apparent rise in cases of lash lice, known more formally as Demodex.

ABC13 say that people who regularly use eyelash extensions might want to think about the last time they cleaned them. A lack of cleaning can reportedly lead to a buildup of bacteria, which paves the way for a host of problems.

Symptoms of Demodex can include itchiness, redness and inflammation. Worse, it can precede the presence of lice.

As per reports, lash lice, like usual head lice, can be transferred from person to person through jumping.

Dr. Sairah Malik explained that a lack of cleaning leads to the bacteria buildup.

The warning comes after doctors have noticed an uptick in lash lice or Demodex, which is reported in users who do not wash eyelash extensions enough or at all. 😲https://t.co/qOzywpOEZs

“Generally the idea when you have eyelash extensions is that people are afraid to kind of touch them or wash them because they’re afraid the eyelash will fall out,” Dr. Malik said.

“We recommend tea tree base cleanser. Any cleanser that has a diluted form of tea tree, and it is a good idea to use on a daily basis.”

What’s more, Dr. Malik believes it’s a good idea to give your natural lashes a break from extensions every once in a while.

Well, it’s certainly something I’ll be considering after reading this story.
